StilaBabe09 Feature is "Catching Fire"

We were super excited to find out that StilaBabe09 aka Meredith Foster has featured us in her Youtube video again!
Not only does she feature us, but she makes a whole outfit! She also"style steals," from one of our favorite style influence, the beautiful and talented Jennifer Lawrence!

In honor of the "Catching Fire" movie opening this past weekend, here's a couple of Jennifer Lawrence gifs.

I ask myself this all the time.

Thanks for info!

Because Finals Season is coming up..

Are you excited to see Catching Fire?

I LOVE LA for many reasons...one of the reason is that the city caters to my passion of hip-hop dance! As a city that fosters the entertainment industry, LA has some of the best (if not THE best) hip-hop studios in the country.

After work and school I spend countless hours dancing in studios throughout Hollywood and North Hollywood! What I love about hip-hop dancing is that everyone has their own style, or "swag". Not only does this apply to their movement, but it also heavily applies toward dancers' hip-hop fashion! Nothing feels better than looking good while doing what you love!

Here's a few fashion observations that I've noticed are in lately in the hip-hop dance movement

Flannel around the waist. This is a common trend that has its roots in the 90's. Nowadays people usually have a plaid flannel, but any button-down long sleeve flannel hanging there gives an effortless & edgy street style.

The 90's trend continues with TROUSERS! Casual trousers or the MC Hammer-esque styles are a HOT dance item because it's baggy yet fitting & sexy. Dancers love the looseness which adds on to their big hip-hop movements.

Oversized tees are also what's in! If you have an oversized top, always try to match it with fitted leggings rather than baggy. Hip-hop is so expressive and vibrant and bold....so the louder the leggings, the better!

You can also accessorize it with a sweater or flannel tied around the waist (as seen in the first picture above).

Tighter tanks or shirts are usually complemented with baggier pants, trousers, or basketball shorts!

SHOES:

Most girls like to wear their old combat boots/Doc Martens, or Timbalands that they're not afraid to mess up anymore.

Another hip-hop dance shoe trending are these old-school midi Reeboks. The louder the color, the better!

Just a few of my observations of what's trending in the studios nowadays :)

XOXO,
MARIEL

DRESSED IN DATA

What's up Q fans?

Happy 11/12/13!

How would you feel if your daily outfits collected environmental data or transformed itself according to the conditions outside? Well, such fashion doesn't exist just yet! But it is a possibility in the near future.

A few weeks ago I visited Massachusetts Institute of Technology, more commonly known as M.I.T, a school that is widely recognized for its research, engineering, top technological inventions, and so forth.

My genius cousin Rachelle, who is also an MIT student, brought me to all of the laboratories where I was able to see a few pending projects and inventions by fashion-minded MIT students.

This project pictured above is called Breathing Skin. The purpose of the skirt is to change shape through pneumatic actuation. A pneumatic actuator converts energy (typically air) into mechanical motion! The ultimate brilliant idea behind this skirt is that it will eventually adapt to the climatic, functional, and emotional needs of the one who is wearing it. For example, the skirt will become shorter in warmer weather, or longer if the user is feeling threatened.

These bold colored dresses picks up data of INDOOR pollutants (not outside). On the display board behind the outfits displays results from findings of each person who was wearing each dress. Wearing the outfits allowed the user to live the data and experience findings from their own home and body... such as detecting chemicals. The students claim that this is "a project that seeks to create aesthetics data experiences thought prompts researchers and laypeople to engage with information in new ways."

Personally, I don't know how I feel about wearing these particular styles...but for the purpose of being a walking experiment, I WOULD BE HONORED! Incredible work by MIT students!

Visiting this intelligent campus was definitely a privilege. I wanted to absorb the intelligence of the students and environment around me! The day did leave me feeling very inspired by students who commit to thinking outside the box as they put their creativity, logic,  and intelligence to action and to shaping our world. We really are the future!

Couldn't pass through MIT without visiting and paying respects to the on campus site of where one of the Boston bombers killed a police officer in a failed attempt to steal his gun. Boston is such a strong, resilient city. The term BOSTON STRONG really lives on. Boston is truly one of the greatest cities I've visited outside of Los Angeles.

Hey everyone! Mariel here. Last week fellow Q blogger, Arielle, had an advertising assignment for class at her fashion school. She chose to do a mock Louis Vuitton winter ad to showcase her favorite Louis Vuitton bag. When she first told me about her project and wanting to work with me, she kept emphasizing, "THINK WINTER!". She mentioned her outfit idea that revolves around her large LV bag and thick white winter fur coat. With that in mind, I had to consider that "thinking winter" in California is a little tough in the beginning of November when it is still 80 degrees outside. I had to think Louis Vuitton...the more eccentric or elegant, the better. But I also had to think realistically of my resources and permit situations...which ultimately lead to sticking with eccentricity and having a winter photoshoot in the desert...just a few miles past Morongo towards Palm Springs. In the end, everything worked out and the location only highlighted the subject perfectly.

Outfit styled by and modeled by Arielle herself! Hope she gets that A! Enjoy!

Winter Favorites!

Chilly wind and dry air mean fall and winter is all about hydration, hydration, hydration. I have dry lips and weird combination (I guess?) skin that is alternately very dry and very oily, and the things on this list have been great for me, so if you're looking for some winter-worthy products these are definitely worth a try! There are also some non-beauty items on here that are also ah-mazing.

1. Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm, $7
Available at CVS, Rite Aid, Target, Walgreens, Whole Foods, Safeway, Wegmans

My favorite is Rose, which really does make my lips a perfect rosy color. They're not quite as hydrating as the original lip balm, but they do the job better than any other hydrating lipstick I've tried for my very dry lips.

2. Korres Wild Rose 24-Hour Moisturizing & Brightening Cream, $35
Available on Amazon, Korres.com, Sephora
For those of you worried about scent (my peers!), this moisturizer is NOT rose-scented! I like this one because it reminds me a lot of the inexplicably discontinued L'Occitane Almond-Apple Concentrate, which was just light enough to satisfy my weird super dry/super oily (it's not even combination, it's just one extreme or the other everyday) skin. It's also great to mix with foundation so that it stays on longer and doesn't flake in the cold air.

3. Nu Skin SunRight Bodyblock SPF 30, $14
Amazon
This sunblock is amazing. It doesn't oil up my face, actually goes on and feels like light, moisturizing lotion, and doesn't smell! The bottle is pretty big, and will last at least several months. It's so "unoily" that I can put it on over make-up without messing up my foundation.

4. Aveda Smoothing Fluid, $28
Aveda, Amazon
Cold mornings and nights mean hot showers, and that in addition to the dry air means my hair is especially brittle and wiry this time of year. Putting this fluid on damp hair makes it silky and soft and protects it at the same time. Another plus: one bottle seriously lasts forever. I've had mine for months and it is not even half empty yet.

5. Aloe Vera gel, $5-7 (or even just buy your own Aloe Vera plant!)
Most drugstores, Amazon, drugstore.com
There is truly nothing better for blisters and wind burns.

6. Joseph & Lyman cashmere sweater, anywhere from $15-40 used
These are the softest sweaters I have ever, ever worn. Designed by the brothers who founded Bloomingdale's, these sweaters aren't sold on Bloomingdale's website and there are really only used items on Ebay (my friend found hers in a vintage store) and are mostly in large men's sizes, but they are very cute over leggings on the days you just want to feel all kinds of comfortable. Trust, me, they are absolutely the softest things you will ever wear.

7. Butter London in "All Hail the Queen", $15
Available at Sephora, Butterlondon.com

No, it isn't really hydrating or anything, but I just had to put this in here because I think it's a great color for when the sky gets a little gloomy and the weather a little wintry. It is calming and festive, fun and sophisticated, unique and versatile. There's really nothing quite like it, so it is worth the money. Bonus: it's free of toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP!
